A Comparison - Classroom Training Vs Online Training Benefits

Let me start out by saying that online training is not better than classroom training. It's different! Both are effective ways of motivating and transferring information. You need to determine your training goals to determine which one is best for your organization.

Let's compare a few things about eLearning and classroom training by asking a few questions that might drive your to consider one method over the other.

Geography How dispersed is your target audience? Are they in clusters or spread out individually? How much travel would be involved? Would the trainer go to them or would they come to the trainer? Trainer Resources Do you have people that can spend time as trainers? Do they have the presentation and subject matter expertise to train the course? Are they up-to-speed on the course content? Maintenance How often will the course change? If changes happen frequently will you need to retrain those who previously attended the course? Technology Does your target audience have computers, audio, network connections? Are they comfortable using them? Can they view video or hear audio? How's your network bandwidth? Do you have the software needed to build the course? Facilities Do you have training rooms? Are they equipped with the needed equipment such as projectors, whiteboards, computers, etc.? Scale How many people need to be trained? How quickly does the course need to roll out? Consistency Does the content and delivery need to be the same each time? Does the content need to be customized for different audiences? Team Skills Do you have the internal skills to create online content? If you want to start building content how long will it take for the team to learn the skills? Will you have to outsource the development?

A Comparison - Classroom Training Vs Online Training Benefits

Online training can drastically reduce travel costs, increase consistency, make updates easier, offer just-in-time access, and can offer personalized content. It has many positives. However, classroom training offers a personal interaction with the trainer, networking with other participants, and can be very entertaining.

Both has pros and cons. Pick the one that best meets your needs. (Ask yourself the questions above to start the process.)
